6 MG1MG2  Recharges the HV battery  Supplies drive power to MG2  Controls CVT functions  Starts ICE  Works with ICE to drive wheels  Provides regenerative braking functions by converting kinetic energy into electrical energy (drive motor to generator functions)  Towing w/front wheels on the ground will generate electricity  Prius should be towed with front wheels off the ground for safety. Why?

7 GEAR COMPONENTR/UD/DD/OD  Sun=smallest  Ring=medium  Carrier=largest  For reverse to occur, hold carrier*  For UD to occur, smaller gear drives larger gear  For DD to occur, input speed=output speed  For OD to occur, larger gear drives smaller gear *Prius uses MG2 to drive wheels in reverse
