EGEE is a project funded by the European Union under contract IST-2003-508833 End-user requirements for network monitoring Paul Mealor JRA4 EGEE Kick-Off Meeting, 20 th April 2004 www.eu-egee.org

EGEE Kick-Off Meeting, JRA4 session, 20 th April 2004 - 2 Contents Finding requirements A use case: User submits a job to “the EDG” But… Other forms of Grid usage

EGEE Kick-Off Meeting, JRA4 session, 20 th April 2004 - 3 Finding requirements End users do not use network information directly  Complexity is hidden, mostly  An interested user might want and be able to use monitored info Requirements expressed through middleware  Replica management API Requirements expressed through Data Centre use  Can we quiz a data centre for end users’ requirements? (and operations requirements) Requirements might be extracted from Data Challenge use  This is real use of grid software  Maybe we can learn from this

EGEE Kick-Off Meeting, JRA4 session, 20 th April 2004 - 4 Not here :-) The job User submits a job to “the EDG” Job submission software Replica management API Network cost estimation system Replica management API Network cost estimation system getNetworkCost(CE,SE,…) getNetworkCost(CE,…,SE,…) getBestReplica(fn) The RB CE RBUser’s machine SE A replica getAccessCosts(job,CE,…)

EGEE Kick-Off Meeting, JRA4 session, 20 th April 2004 - 5 But… A user can find out what actually happened to their job So they have enough information to do after-the-event debugging  Requires that measurements have already been made Also, a user might be able to force settings  Which CEs and replicas to use, say  Therefore, set up monitoring to run as the job does  But this is getting to Operations-type use, no?

EGEE Kick-Off Meeting, JRA4 session, 20 th April 2004 - 6 Other forms of grid usage HEP field is (I would say) dominated by the above usage model  At least, replica management seems to be the major use of the networks However, other fields may not be:  Medical imaging?  Biology applications?  Video-conferencing  Earth Observation? – “end-to-end services with user involvement” Other use cases  Proving QoS (without interfering with it)
