Climate Chapter 17 Caitlin Maloney and Colton Spear

Section One Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular time and place. Climate is the average weather condition in a certain area over a long period of time. Climate is controlled by factors such as latitude, elevation, wind patterns, local geography, and ocean surface currents.

Section Two The earth is divided into three climate zones: the tropical zone, the temperate zone, and the polar zone. The sections inside of the climate zones ate biomes. Inside of the biomes there microclimates. The temperate zone contains evergreen and deciduous trees because the climate is mild. The tropical zone contains rain forests, deserts and savannas. The polar zone contains the taiga and the tundra.

Section Three The occurrence of ice ages include changes in the Earth’s orbit, volcanic eruptions, and plate tectonics and continental drift. Some scientists believe that global warming is occurring as a result of an increase in carbon dioxide from human activity, also known as the greenhouse effect. If global warming continues, it could drastically change climates, causing either floods or drought.
