SHELBY KAROW & EMILY FRENCH THE EXECUTION OF SADDAM HUSSEIN

WHO WAS HE? Saddam Hussein was born in 1937 in Iraq. He had 5 children. He was the president of Iraq from July 16 th, 1979 to April 9 th, 2003. He tried to keep his country separate by race and religion. He was guilty of several crimes, including murdering 148 Iraqi Shi’ite and attempting to assassinate the prime minister. He was 69 when he was executed.

WHO WAS HE?

WHAT HAPPENED? Suddam Hussein was found guilty of crimes against humanity in November of 2006. He was executed on December 30 th, 2006 by hanging at an Iraqi-American military base called Camp Justice, just northeast of Baghdad. He was the only one executed that day.

THE VIDEO SCANDAL An official video of Suddam Hussein’s execution was released to the public. It cut off just before he died. A cell phone video showing his complete death was leaked and went viral on the internet. A security guard who worked at Camp Justice was arrested for taking and leaking the video. However, many people were angry that a video of him dying was released. They thought it was cruel.

AFTERMATH Saddam Hussein saw himself as a “sacrifice” and asked Iraqis to unite. He became a martyr. Some people saw him as a symbol of Iraq for saying no to America and were angry about his death. However, some people thought his death was justified because he was a cruel leader. There was a great debate on whether the trial was fair or not and if he deserved to be executed.
