Chapter 17 ~lesson 1 Church Leaders Continue to Call for Justice and Peace  Pope Paul VI showed concern for international justice and world peace.  He issued an encyclical “Populorum Progressio” ( On The Development of People) in 1967.  His 1971 Apostolic letter “Octogesima Adveniens” or”Eightieth Anniversary, honored Pope Leo XIII’s social justice encyclical Rerum Novarum.  Pope Paul VI died in 1978, and after 2 days of voting, Pope John Paul I was elected.  He died 33 days later. 1978 would be referred to as the “year of three popes.”

4. Chapter 17 ~lesson 1  In October 1978 a second conclave was convened.  After 3 days, Archbishop Karol Wojtyla of Krakow, Poland was elected.  He was the first non-Italian Pope since the 16 th century and one of the youngest in about 130 years.

He issued the encyclical Laborem Exercens, commemorating the ninetieth anniversary of Rerum Novarum.  Pope John Paul II was credited with helping to end the long and brutal rule of Communism in Russia and Eastern Europe.  He reached out especially to the Jewish faith.  In the year 2000, Pope John Paul II visited the Holy Land.  He became known as one of the most widely traveled popes.  He established World Youth Days to strengthen young people’s faith.

6. Chapter 17 ~lesson 1 Jewish – Christian Relations Today  October 28, 1965, Pope Paul VI issued “Nostra Aetate,” In Our Time. This encyclical states that, we, the Church, cannot forget that our revelation of God came through the Israelites, the Jewish people.  The Church decries any forms of hatred, persecution, and displays of anti-Semitism against the Jewish people.  In October 2005, on the 40 th anniversary of “Nostra Aetate,” Pope Benedict expressed the need to continue to improve Christian-Jewish relations.  In August 2005, Pope Benedict XVI visited a synagogue in Germany, to celebrate World Youth Day.
