Coefficients

Subscripts are on the lower right of the symbol and tell us how many of that particular element is in the compound. CH 4 C = 1 H = 4 Total # of Atoms =

We also learned about parentheses. This tells us that there is a specific amount of those particular elements in the chemical compound. In this case, our subscript on the right of the parentheses is 3. You will have to multiply everything in the parentheses by 3. C 3 N 3 (OH) 3

C = 3 N = 3 O = 3x1=3 H = 3x1=3 Total # of Atoms = 12

We will now learn about coefficients. Coefficients are on the left of the compound and act as a multiplier for all of the atoms in the entire compound. 5CO 2 5CO 2 = CO 2 CO 2 CO 2 CO 2 CO 2

That means, a chemical reaction used or produced 5 molecules of the compound CO 2. We will have to multiply everything by 5. 5CO 2 C = 5x1=5 O = 5x2=10 Total # of Atoms = 15

Let’s Practice! Reactants are on the left side of the arrow. Products are on the right side of the arrow. The arrow sign is read as yields.
