2. Define demography. The gathering and analysis of information about human populations It includes anything that deals with a population’s size, composition, distribution, density or growth

3. In point form, briefly outline the history of the census. Early Roman times- small regional censuses ( usually for tax purposes) 1066- the Doomsday Book in England ( usually for tax purposes) 1749- Sweden –the 1st national census 1790-USA- used enumerators

4. Summarize how data can be collected Mail-delivered surveys (usually in countries with high literacy rates and good postal system) Enumerators going door-to –door (usually in LDCs)

5. Why can a census be inaccurate? People being uncooperative Not enough money, personnel, or organization to do it properly Unavoidable mistakes Not all citizens counted Homelessness Enumerators fear of entering certain areas Isolation-can’t be reached by enumerators Confusion-people not at home at the time Privacy issues General disdain for or suspicions of the whole process

Faulty predictions Unfair political representation (boundaries, number of representatives) Unfair levels of funding (school boards, etc) Lack of funding for homeless people (they aren’t always in census, so not counted when programs developed) Wrong target populations for products Faulty economic policies- based on inaccurate counts of people
