1 Breaking Barriers: essay for contest OR inspirational poster for hall timeline 1.After you reach an understanding on barriers and values, decide whether you want to do a poster for the hall timeline or write an essay for the contest on this theme. 2.Choose a person whose major achievement(s) occurred between 1850-2000 who broke a cultural, economic, political or other barrier and displays (displayed) one of the nine values listed on the hand-out. 3.Complete the “Inspiration” sheet on this person. Be able to explain what barrier they broke and how they demonstrate one of Jackie Robinson’s nine values. 4.Create your poster or write your essay based on this information. Both the poster and the essay must include the following: 1.A quote by this person. 2.Short background on this person. 3.Who or what inspired them. 4.How they made the world a better place. 5.Poster only must also include a picture of the person. 6.Essay should follow contest guidelines at http://www.scholastic.com/breakingbarriers/teachers/http://www.scholastic.com/breakingbarriers/teachers/

2 Grading and Due Dates Poster is due 3/2/16. Essay is due in Kidblog by 3/10/16. Poster will be scored 20 points per section: person’s name, picture, background paragraph, inspirational quote and paragraph on barriers and values. Essay will be scored on how well you follow the rules and guidelines of the scholastic.com contest. Be sure you meet the word count and include your own example of how you have overcome a barrier in your life.
