2 Music Music of the 1970s saw the rise of experimental classical music and music by classical composers. Emerging genres included jazz-rock fusion, chamber jazz, reggae, Heavy Metal and hip hop. Members of the heavy metal band, Kiss, were famous not only for their music, but for stage theatrics and wild make up. Other known Artist: – The Partridge Family – Jackson 5 – The Commodores – Simon and Garfunkel

3 Entertainment 1972, The Godfather earned almost $135 Million. Jaws earned $133 Million All in the Family was the first T.V. show that talked about race relations, feminism, sexuality, abortion, and other controversial issues. 1970 American Top 40 a weekly countdown of hits on pop music charts hosted by Casey Kasem debuts on national radio. Roller Skating was also a major form of entertainment.

4 Pop culture The Pet Rock, and elaborately packaged stone, becomes a popular holiday gift. In 1977 the huge success of Saturday Night Fever and its soundtrack with the Bee Gees, it seemed white pop stars had taken over Disco. The true Diva of Disco was Donna Summer and her hit “Last Dance.” Many young Americans took up Kung Fu, Yoga Tennis, Jogging, Camping, Hiking, among with other physical activities.

6 Transportation Between 1971 and 1973 more than half of the U.S. population boarded scheduled air-liners, and Americans were responsible for some 60 per-cent of the world's air traffic. Airline hijacking became a serious problem at the beginning of the decade. Between 1930 and 1970 there had been about two hundred skyjackings. Driving was also a major mode of transportation.

7 Literature Fiction in the early '70s brought a return to old-fashioned storytelling, especially with Erich Segal's Love Story. The seventies also saw the decline of previously well-respected writers, such as Saul Bellow and Peter De Vries De, who both released poorly received novels at the start of the decade. 9 Changing roles of individuals and family In the 70's, family life was a bit simpler than it is today. There were fewer working mothers, so more mom's were able to be home with and for the children, and meal time was more family time, instead of fast food take out. Also, not having constant outside interruptions (cell phones, email, etc.) helped keep things more simple, and families communicated better with each other instead of the person on the other end of the cell phone or email. The television programs didn't have as much violence and profanity, so there weren't as many bad influences on teens. God was still allowed in the classrooms, and there were no school shootings. It was safer to sleep with bedroom windows open at night, and was safer to walk where you wanted to go without as much fear of being attacked as there is today.

10 Fashion  70’s fashion was extremely stylish, flashier and influential with more of skin show. The 70’s was also viewed as the dawn of disco fashion. The success of Saturday Night Fever of John Travolta popularized the disco fashion of 1970’s.  Accessories Large medallions and bracelets along with leather purses and large sunglasses.

11 Fashion Hot Pants: hot pants ruled the 1970’s disco fashion Spandex Tops: Stretch sequin bandeau tops, leopard skin and hot strident shiny colors that glowed in disco lights captured the 70’s disco fashion Zippered Jumpsuits: Stretch halter jumpsuits and zippered jumpsuits were popular among men and women Skirts: from mini to maxi length skirts, exotic and tropical prints were quite in vogue during 70’s. Go-Go dresses were also style statements of disco fashion

12 Fashion Pants: Flared pants and wide bell bottoms were popular trends of 70’s disco fashion Stylish 3 Piece Suits: Stylish 3 piece suits characterized by high-rise vests, wide lapels and flared trousers were popular among men, pointed long collared shirts with bolder and wider neckties Jackets: satin jackets were one of the hottest trends Footwear: Platform shoes, boots

16 Natural Disasters October 14 1970, Typhoon in the Philippines (583) October 29, 1971, Cyclone in Northeastern India (10,000+) May 31, 2009 the Ancash earthquake killed (100,000+) February 1972 the Iran Blizzard killed 4,000 people. In 1977 a Blizzard happened in New England $300,000,000 in damage. In the Spring of 1973 the Mississippi River reached the highest it had been in 150 years. Flooding occurred throughout the river basin. On February 21, 1971, a tornado hit in the Mississippi Delta and left 15 dead.
