Concepts: four noble truths "I teach suffering, its origin, cessation and path. That's all I teach", declared the Buddha 2500 years ago.

Concepts: four noble truths 1. The truth of suffering (Dukkha) 2. The truth of the origin of suffering (Samudāya) 3. The truth of the cessation of suffering (Nirodha) 4. The truth of the path to the cessation of suffering (Magga)

1. The truth of suffering (Dukkha) Life often—in fact almost always— involves suffering.

2. The truth of the origin of suffering (Samudāya) The reason for this suffering is that we want things we can not or do not have. Or, more important, we become "attached" to those things.

3. The truth of the cessation of suffering (Nirodha) The way to cure suffering is to stop the wanting. we can never get everything we want, partly because the more we have, the more we want.

4. The truth of the path to the cessation of suffering (Magga) The way to stop wanting is to follow the Noble Eightfold Path, which focuses not on changing things around us, but instead it focuses on changing our own mind on how we view things.

Eightfold path Wisdom - Right view - right intention Ethical Conduct - right speech - right action - right livelihood Mental development - right effort - right mindfulness - right concentration

Theravada buddhism (sri lanka, burma, thailand, cambodia) Closest to the ancient buddhist teachings “Lesser Vehicle” / WISDOM Personal pursuit of nirvana You need to “work out your own salvation” The Best way to achieve this is through STUDY, meditation and monastic practice Siddartha Gautama was a man who became the 4 th buddha, the awakened one – he is the buddha (The Bodhisattva maitreya will come one day – he is the 5 th buddha)

Mahayana buddhism (china, korea, japan, vietnam) “The Higher Vehicle” / COMPASSION Elevated buddha to divine being Buddha is the path to salvation He came to earth to assist humans Bodhisattvas have already reached advanced states of grace but don’t enter nirvana so they can help others
