 Any device that supplies electric power to an electric load.  The different types of power supply include:  Battery  DC power supply  AC power supply  Linear regulated power supply  Switched mode power supply

 Unregulated DC voltage is often derived from the utility AC source.  Unregulated capacitor voltage becomes input to the linear power supply circuit.  Unless capacitor is sufficiently large, the capacitor voltage may have unacceptably large ripple.  Low frequencies, bulky, expensive and heavy

 An electrical power supply that incorporates a switching regulator to convert electrical power efficiently.  It transforms power from a source, to a load, while converting voltage and current characteristics.  Voltage regulation is achieved by varying the ratio of on-to-off time.

Advantages:  Lower weight  Smaller size  High efficiency  Lower power dissipation  ON and OFF Switch  Reduced cost  Ripples filtered using filtering elements Disadvantages:  Complexity of the circuit Disadvantages:  Heavy weight  Bulky size  Low efficiency  Higher power dissipation  Always remain active  Expensive  Much ripples Advantages:  Simple circuit

 Fly-back  Forward  Push-Pull  C’uk  Sepic  Half bridge  Full bridge

 Machine tool industries  Security systems(Closed circuit cameras)  Support supplies with PLC’s  Personal Computers  Mobile Phone Chargers

 The most common SMPS topologies are fly- back, push-pull, half bridge and full bridge converters has been outlined.  Each has it’s own particular operating characteristics and advantages, which makes it suitable to particular applications.  Ripple filtered
