Lecture Time & Place Jan 9-Mar 30: – TTh 9:30-10:20am in Avery 111 (presents paper) – TF 10:25-11am in Schorr Center 104 (gives individual student guide on presentation) Apr 2-Apr 27: – No class due to the instructor’s maternity leave; students will read papers on their own and submit paper summaries to the instructor

Project Group Meeting Hours From the 4 th -11 th week: – Weekly meeting with each project group – Office hours only by appointment

Paper Review I Each week – Read two papers – For each paper, write one page summary to state the contributions of the paper your critique of the paper (such as what you liked and didn’t like about the paper) opportunities for future work on the topic

Paper Review II Each week – Email the summary of the paper to me before the day of the class when we will discuss the paper – Email subject: 990 SUMMARY – Email body: the title of the paper – Include your name and the title of the paper in the summary

Student Presentation I For the whole semester, each student will – Give two paper presentations in class and lead the in-class discussion of the papers

Student Presentation II If you will present a paper on Tuesday – Submit your slides to me on Thursday – Meet me 10:25-11am Friday in my office (104 Schorr Center) to discuss the slides If you will present a paper on Thursday – Submit your slides to me on Monday – Meet me 10:25-11am Tuesday in my office to discuss the slides

Project Group Project group of 2 students conducts a substantial 11week-long course project, where you will design and simulate some innovative aspect of distributed computing systems

Project Timeline I Project group is formed within a week, with a list of group members submitted to me by Jan 19, next Thursday Project topic is chosen by each group within the first 3 weeks. If possible, it is highly recommended that you choose a topic that is also related to your research

Project Timeline II From the 4 th week, each group will schedule a weekly 30-minute meeting with me to discuss progress and problems on your project A 3-page project proposal is due on Feb 14 (in the 6 th week)

Project Timeline III Each group will give a 40-minute final project presentation during the 11 th week

Project Timeline IV Final project is due on Apr 2 (the first day of the 12 th week), Each group should have – A complete set of results, software artifacts, demos, or developed theoretical findings – A 10-page, two-column, 11/10pt font project report explaining the main contributions

Grading Paper reviews20% (up to 5% bonus) Class participation10% Paper presentation20% (2% bonus for 1 st and 2 nd student presenter) Proposal 10% Project final presentation10% Project results and report30%
