Warm up and review for quiz tomorrow Simplify the following 1) x 2 x x 5 x 2)5x 5 4x 9 3) (3y 7 f 3 ) 3 4) 5) 6) 7)

Scientific Notation Definition: Scientific Notation is a shorthand way of writing large or small numbers. In scientific notation, a number is written as the product of two factors. The First factor is a number between 1 and 10. The Second factor is a power of 10. The power of 10 factor tells how many places to move the decimal point.

Positive exponents (Large numbers) 7.5 x 10 5 = 750,000 – Move the decimal point 5 times to the right 6.43 x 10 8 = 643,000,000 – Move the decimal 8 places to the right 9.3125 x 10 6 = 9,312,500 – Move decimal 6 places to the right

Negative exponents (Small Numbers) 1.456 x 10 – 6 = 0.000001456 – Move decimal 6 places to the LEFT 6.51 x 10 – 9 = 0.00000000651 – Move decimal 9 Places to the LEFT 9.999999 x 10 – 5 = 0.00009999999 – Move decimal 5 places to the LEFT

Warm-up 2-9-2011 1) 5.41 x 10 5 2) 8.451 x 10 – 6 3) 6.2 x 10 7 4) 7.3124 x 10 – 4

Write them in Scientific Notation 6,943,000,000 Where does the decimal have to be for it to be between 1 – 10? 6.943 is between 1 and 10 Now since you made the number 6.943 we need to count how many times we moved the decimal to get that number. Since we moved the decimal 9 times that is our exponent 6.943 x 10 9

Try some together 4.762 x 10 6 7.2 x 10 12 2.35 x 10 – 4 8.9 x 10 – 8 4,762,000 = 7,200,000,000,000 = 0.000235 = 0.000000089 =
