2 Definition of a Polynomial A polynomial is an expression that is constructed from variables and constants, and also includes coefficients and exponents. Polynomials only deal with multiplication, addition, subtraction, and whole number non- negative exponents.

4 Forms of Polynomials Polynomials are often written in descending order with the largest exponent first. – Examples: 4x 2 +3x+2 2x 5 +3x 3 -4x 4x 7 -5x 3 +2x 2 -3

5 Degrees of Polynomials Polynomials are given a degree based on the largest exponent. – Examples: 4x 2 +3x+22 nd degree 2x 5 +3x 3 -4x5 th degree 4x 7 -5x 3 +2x 2 -37 th degree

6 Other Words To Know Variable – Usually represented as “x” and is generally what an equation is trying to solve for. Constant – A constant is just a plain number that is not being multiplied by a variable. Coefficient – A coefficient is attached to a variable and is to be multiplied by the variable. Exponent – An exponent is used to show when a variable or constant is being raised to a power. Term – A term is an individual piece within a polynomial that is being added or subtracted.
