What factors influence the location and size of Human Settlement? Physical Factors: –Landforms –Climates –Nearness to bodies of water

Where people live People live today in the same areas they always have –Near river valleys with good soil –In mild climates –Near the coast

Why live there? Rivers and oceans offer food and protection most importantly water ways are used for transportation and commerce The land nearby is great for agriculture

Where people don’t live In deserts In extreme climates (too hot; too cold) In the mountains In areas without resources

Human Factors: –People live near resources –People can live in remote places with modern technology –People live near major trade routes

Resources Living in the desert near oil resources can bring in a lot of money

Technology The southern United States was difficult to live in before the invention of Air Conditioning

Trade Routes People trade for items they can not produce themselves Trade brings in money People live where they can easily make money

Why do people move? Push Factors –Negative things that push people away from their homes Pull Factors –Positive things that pull people to new places. Urbanization creates pull factors –Cities get larger

Revolutions Agricultural Revolution- 10,000 years ago –People developed agriculture –More food was produced –Cities and civilizations developed because not everyone needed to be a farmer –Major increase in the world’s population

Industrial Revolution- 1780-1900 –Goods were being produced in a factory using machines –This lead to the spread of cheap, modern tools and medicines –Lead to the 2 nd major increase in human population about 200 years ago
