2 Past perfect tense 7:30am…. I ate a big breakfast
8:00am…. I went to school. Now…. 1:00 pm Both of these activities happened in the past!  However, one happened before the other What happened first?  What happened second? First:  I ate breakfast. Second:  I went to school.

3 Here is a common way to write (or say) these two actions using the past perfect.  The past perfect is written in red. Before I went to school, I had eaten a big breakfast. -OR- After I had eaten breakfast, I went to school.

4 The past perfect tense Look at this sentence . I had eaten my breakfast before I went to school. 6:30 a.m :00 a.m

5 How is the past perfect formed?
Had+PP. Ali had played football before he went back home.

6 Look at this example. After she had taken his music lesson,
she made a telephone call.

7 What had Ali done before he went fishing?
Ali had repaired his car, before he went fishing.

8 The key words of this tense are:
after as soon as {had+PP} Past simple

9 The key words of this tense are:
before {past simple} + Had+PP By the time

10 The use of the past perfect tense.
We use the past perfect to talk about an action which happened before another action in the past

11 After I had finished work ,I watched TV
Make similar sentences using after and before. Finish work-watch TV After I had finished work ,I watched TV Before I watched TV ,I had finished my work.

12 As soon as I had eaten my breakfast,I went to school
Make similar sentences using by the time and as soon as Eat breakfast-go to school By the time I went to school,I had eaten my breakfast. As soon as I had eaten my breakfast,I went to school

13 Police arrive-thief escape
Make similar sentences using by the time and as soon as Police arrive-thief escape By the time the police arrived,the thief had escaped. As soon as the thief had escaped ,the police arrived.
