1 Native Americans Unite and The Women’s Movement Objective: Describe the goals and successes of Native American protests for rights and recognition; Evaluate reasons for the women’s movement and describe its efforts to win rights for women

2 How did Native Americans begin to unite for reform 1953 – federal government began ‘termination policy’ that ended federal protection of land and other assets held by Native American tribes Led to a decline of traditional Native American cultures

3 NCAI (National Congress of American Indians) founded in 1944 to promote ‘common welfare’ of Native Americans Led protest of ‘termination policy’ which was changed in 1958

4 What was the result of Native American protests and court cases in the 1970s? Native American protests resulted in more federal aid Indian Self-Determination Act of 1975 – gave tribal governments more control over social programs, law enforcement, and education

5 What kinds of discrimination did women face in the 1960s? Kept out of many jobs Limited legal rights (signing contracts, selling property, getting credit) Could lose job if pregnant Pressured to quit when they got married; working outside the home viewed as unnatural

6 What were NOW’s goals? Betty Friedan helped found NOW and described problems faced by women in The Feminine Mystique NOW (National Organization for Women) – goals were to help women get good jobs and equal pay for their work

7 Why did the Equal Rights Amendment die without being ratified? 1972 – Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) sent to states for ratification Supporters – amendment would protect women against discrimination and help them achieve equality with men including equal job opportunities and education and equal pay

8 Amendment failed due to well-organized opposition Phyllis Schlafly – most famous opponent Argued that ERA would destroy American families and that the problems of women were not the government’s business

9 What reforms helped to reduce discrimination against women? Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Higher Education Act of 1972 – outlawed discrimination against women Laws helped expand opportunities for women in education, sports, and the workplace
