The Character Sketch Setting it up…

What is a Character Sketch A character sketch describes how an author has created a mental image of a character with her words.

What is a Character Sketch? What the author does, says or thinks about the character helps shape the reader’s opinion. We are also influenced by the character’s interactions with others in the book.

What is a Character Sketch? A character may be described in many areas (physical, mental, social, moral, etc). These all affect how the reader reacts to the character.

The Plan By now you have developed lists of character traits for three of the major characters in your novel, along with support from the text itself. This will be your research. Choose which of the three characters you would like to use for your Character Sketch essay.

The Plan Make sure the character you choose is interesting to you. This should also be a character that you feel has been well- described and has developed throughout your novel. Now is the time to make sure that you have enough character traits and support to fully develop your writing.

The Plan Use your Character Essay Planning Page to set up the first draft of your sketch. Be as specific as you can in your description. Make sure to cite real examples from the novel. There are links on our wiki to help.

On the Horizon… Paragraphing review… The First Draft… Editing… The Second Draft… Editing… The Third Draft… …you see where I’m going with this?
