Pass in the U1-3C Comprehensive Test (homework) Get a Ruler and a Triangle, then complete the DRILL using the word bank below. 1.Write and complete the following as equations: A.The product of a force (F) applied to an object and the distance (d) the object moves equals ________. B.The ratio of Output Work (Wo) from a system to Input Work (Wi) equals _______. January 2, 2008 DRILL U3d-L1 Mechanical TechnologyWork (W) Efficiency (Eff) A B F x d = W Wo / Wi = Eff

UNIT 3 – Engineering Design Engineering, the systematic application of mathematical, scientific, and technical principles, produces tangible end products that meet our needs and desires. What is a systematic application of something? – an organized or established procedure; – a set of steps U3d-L1

UNIT 3 – Engineering Design a.Getting familiar with the Big Idea b.The Design Process c.Core Technologies d.Mechanical Technology e.Electrical Technology f.Reverse Technology g.Fluid Technology h.Thermal Technology i.Optical Technology j.Materials Technology

Mechanical Technology PURPOSE OF SUB-UNIT To familiarize students with the functioning and applications of mechanical technology systems by having you analyze the functioning of mechanical systems in terms of their: –common components, –basic system design, –safety considerations, and –simple controls. U3d-L1

Mechanical Technology What is technology? The application of knowledge, tools, and skills to solve problems and extend human capabilities. What is a technology system? A Technology System is a group of subsystems working together to solve problems and extend human capabilities. U3d-L1

There are several engineering resources (core technologies) that are the “building blocks” of all technology systems. We could store the core technologies on shelves We can go to those shelves and use technologies according to our needs in problem solving. Mechanical Technology Core Technologies Mechanical StructuralElectrical ElectronicThermal FluidOptical Bio-TechMaterial U3d-L1

The technology of putting together mechanical parts to produce, control, and transmit motion. Example applications: Gear systems in a car transmission, Brakes on a bicycle, Agitator in a washing machine, Latch on a door. Springs in vehicle shocks

U3d-L1 Machines are artifacts that transmit or change the application of power, force, or motion. What is an artifact? –something created by humans usually for a practical purpose. Machines can be simple or complex –Complex machines are comprised of…. Inputs go in Outputs come out Simple Machines

U3d-L1 On a clean sheet of notebook paper, use a pencil to draw 6 2” x 2” squares equally spaced. Number them. SIMPLE MACHINES 1.2. 3.4. 5.6. VERY LIGHT Construction Line 2” 1” 2” 1.5”

CONSTRAINT : You can use only the following system components: –Levers –Pivot Points –Linkage Joints U3d-L1 GOAL: Transmit the given input motion to the desired output motion.

U3d-L1 1. COMPONENTS: –Levers –Pivot Points –Linkage Joints INPUT COPY THIS INTO #1

U3d-L1 INSTRUCTIONS: Transmit the given input motion to the desired output motion using only the allowed components. input 2.3.4. 5.6. Correctly copy the following onto the remaining 2” x 2” boxes in your notebook.
