SCEC Annual Meeting Sept. 10-13, 2006 Enjoy the Meeting… Big One’s a-comin’ As scientists, we need to prepare… to capture vital data from this inevitable event… to test models and to better understand earthquakes

SCEC Annual Meeting Sept. 10-13, 2006 #1) Focus more effort of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults #2) Attack sites with larger multi-PI teams #3) Run a lot more C-14 dates and standardize methodology #4) Place more emphasis on getting slip per event data #5) Increase quantification and reproducibility in the characterization and analysis of paleoseismic data #6) Develop a few keystone sites in regions with large data gaps Most important we need more qualified people working on the problem and adequate money to support them

SCEC Annual Meeting Sept. 10-13, 2006 SoSAFE Objectives and Plans Help develop this project in the collective interest –Multi-disciplinary integration to identify problems of mutual interest and to design experiments –Coordinated new proposals to best allocate current funds and to raise further inter-agency support SCEC as partner with USGS internal (SCEHAP Task 7) –New Urban Earth Initiative funds via SCEC $240K this year –USGS internal support - several FTE’s this year (increase from past years’ level of effort) and additional funds will be requested for next year –Coordinate and submit NSF collaborative proposal to augment SoSAF Geologic and geodetic initial focus through SCEC SoSAF Project –Slip rates (quantify offset features; refine dating; refine models) –Earthquake history (go back many events, several thousand years)
