Introduction

What We Will Be Doing…  You will pay attention to Notice and Note, Vocabulary, Characterization, and Theme as we read through the books  Once we are finished reading we will write an essay answering the following question: What is the strongest theme which is prevalent throughout the novel, The Outsiders? Use evidence to support your claim.  We will then watch the film and write an essay comparing and contrasting the film to the book

Outsider Free Write  One of the themes of the novel, The Outsiders, is the idea of being an outsider or a misfit and how that impacts the characters’ lives. Think of a time when you thought you were an outsider or left out. How did you feel? What happened to make you feel like an outsider or left out? Did that experience change you or teach you anything?

What You Will Keep Track Of…  Complete a Reader’s Response ‘Notebook’ in your binder  Title it: The Outsiders RRN  Section 1: Notice and Note (will receive templates for)  Section 2: Character Charts (need 7 loose leaf pages, or 4 pages if you are doing double sided)  Section 3: Vocabulary (need a couple loose leaf pages)  Section 4: Gathering Evidence (will receive template for on Wednesday)  Section 5: Reading Calendar (will receive template for)

Section 2: Character Charts  You will need 7 full pages (1 page for each character)  Each character’s name will be the title  Characters: Ponyboy Curtis Sodapop Curtis Darry Curtis Johnny Cade Dally Winston Two-Bit Mathews Steve Randle

Character Charts Continued…  Two items placed under the title/character’s name (three items for Johnny and Ponyboy): 1. Physical description (examples: blonde hair, blue eyes, big smile) 2. Personality traits (examples: caring, tough, considerate, social, etc.) 3. Attitude toward gang (Do they like the gang? Do they wish the gang would help out more? Do they dislike the gang?) *only need to do this for Ponyboy and Johnny  You will be using quotes to support your claim (i.e. if you say he has brown hair, find the part in the book that states that, quote it, and cite the page)
