Which of these items are technology?

MOM’S APPLE PIE Food Science

Observations  Use a blank sheet of paper and write down the following for each sample:  Smell  Texture  Visual appeal  Noticeable differences  Which pie was your favorite? Why?  Wait to taste until instructed to do so!

No-Apple Apple Pie  Recipe:  2 cups water  1 ½ cups sugar  1 ½ teaspoons cream of tartar  25 Ritz crackers  ½ teaspoon cinnamon2 tablespoons butter

So where are the apples?!

Tartaric Acid  Cream of tartar  Sour/tart flavor  Similar structure to malic acid (apple flavor) Tartaric acidMalic acid

Mind Games  Color versus flavor perception  If it looks like pie, and taste like pie it must be pie!  Opens the door to artificial coloring, flavoring, and synthetic products. Consider why butter is yellow or cheese is orange…  What are some reasons we may not use real apples?  Is this technology? Why? Why not?

Your Turn  You will be preparing an apple pie sample (need 3-4 pies total) on Monday for another 1B class. Work as a class to determine supplies, procedure, how you will evaluate, present (give samples) etc. your goal is for them to be convinced it is a true apple pie due to your “artificial flavoring/manipulation” and to work as a team where EVERYONE has a purpose  Prepare today and submit supply list to ensure you can complete task at hand on Monday. ALL classmates MUST have a purpose and work together – NO instructor guidance will be provided – you are a team.
