What it takes to be a Catholic School Principal in the 21 st Century. By Donna J. Moss, Principal Sacred Heart Cathedral School, Raleigh, NC
2
GUTS? GLORY? But you be strong and do not lose courage, for there is reward for your work. 2 Chronicles 15:7 Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, “I’ll try again tomorrow.” Mary Anne Radmacher-Hershey All glory comes from daring to begin. Anonymous Glory: Everything that makes God beautiful and great. Do your decisions and actions glorify God?
3
We said, “YES!” God given ability to give direction and make decisions on behalf of others that result in efficient operation and accomplishment of goals. Administration includes the ability to organize people, things, information, finances, etc. Often the mark of an administrator is the ability to accomplish things in a fitting and orderly way in accordance with God’s principles. 1 Corinthians 14:40

1 Peter 4: 10-11 When graced with a gift, an individual has a duty to use that gift to serve others and faithfully administer God’s grace to others. When using a gift, Peter also notes that the proper use of gifts is necessary for the glorification of God through Jesus Christ. In this manner, the use of gifts becomes an act of stewardship and faith.

Each day in Catholic School Administration is a gift.

A Day in the Life... Check e-mail Find coverage for a tardy teacher Supervise morning arrival and assembly Parent waiting for you at your office (he just needs “a minute”) Classroom observation Budget Meeting with the Pastor Return phone calls that came in while out of office Student behavior issue Call from school photographer to set class picture date A few first graders stop by to read you the stories they wrote Ready agenda for faculty meeting Teacher needs to talk with you (“it will only take a minute”) Did you know the internet was down? Offer your expert diagnosis on a skin rash that wanders down to the office And that’s all before lunch....

21 st Century Catholic Schools Every Catholic School should be a model school that sets the standard for excellence in its community. Its Catholic identity is strong, visible, and rich with tradition and they make no apology for that. Best practices for teaching and learning will be expected as will the seamless integration of technology by students and adults. Students are engaged and responsible for their own learning. Higher order thinking skills are expected as is collaboration with peers. Grading policies have been revamped with an emphasis on mastery of specific skills, not letter grades. Behavior problems have been eliminated due to the engaging, student-centered environment. Budget problems have been solved due to a fully functioning advancement office that acts strategically in all areas of admissions, marketing, and development.

Name it! Claim it! Love it!

God pays attention to our love. Not one of us is indispensable. God has the means to do all things and to do away with the work of the most capable human being. We can work until we drop. We can work excessively. If what we do is not connected to love, however, our work is useless in God’s eyes. ~ Mother Teresa
