Digital Device Bunch Access to Andrea Wallace and Jill Pfluke Pinellas County TVIs WWE 12/6/12 Digital Text Session 2

Next step: Accessing the books Browse and/or search for the books you need. (If you are using your Organizational Membership, you will have to choose the member for whom you are downloading the book).

Select “browse” and choose the category within which to do so. The screen looks like this:

In the Authors category, you can search by the author’s last name. Choose the first letter of the last name. Then select the Author you want. All of the materials by that author will be listed. Scroll through to find the specific book you want to download.

Searching by Category displays the following:

Selecting a category will enable you to view a list of materials for that topic. To see a list of the most frequently downloaded books, go back to Browse and select Most Frequently Downloaded Books. The NIMAC Books category provides a means for searching both Bookshare and the National Instructional Materials Access Center.

NIMAC materials have to be requested if not already on Bookshare. Bookshare recommends that you reference the learning guide entitled “How Do I Get Textbooks?” You can use the link below to log a request: https://www.bookshare.org/portal/solution/ni mac-request-nonauthorized-state

The Special Collections category has 3 subsections. General Collections:

Children’s Collections:

Lastly, the Genre Collections:

OR, you can search through the standard method, using the box at the top in the middle of the homepage… …which will search through all of the materials on Bookshare. Results are displayed by author, title, and then content matches.

OR, you can perform an Advanced Search, using the link below the standard search box: This allows you to refine and narrow your search by Title, Author, ISBN, and Publisher. The more information you enter, the narrower the search and the fewer the results. It is recommended to complete one or all of the sections.

In Advanced Search, you can use Full Text if you know a phrase from the book, but not the title or author. It will search the full text of all of the materials on Bookshare. You can also specify the quality, the language, and the grade level of the books you want to find. You can also choose how you would the results sorted.

Quick Search works like Standard Search, but produces a no-frills page that contains just the Search box and can be bookmarked for future use.

If you need to request a book, use the Contact Us link and provide as much information as possible, such as the Title, Author, ISBN no., the reason you need it and the grade level. Check for it in the New Books link in the Browse section.

Once you have found the book you want, you need to select the format. If you are using your Organizational Membership, you will have to choose the member for whom you are downloading the book. You can select more than one student at a time. Then click on Download Books. In this screen shot, it is actually “hidden” behind the play/ pause button, in an orange rectangle.

On the next screen, confirm by selecting “Download” again.

Select the link on the next page for actually downloading the book.

Note that each student has their own file. If you have already downloaded a book, you will be prompted to enter the password you created; if not, you will have to create one. You will need it in order to unzip/extract the book files. It will be visible every time you download a book.

Book Formats Books can be downloaded in DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) and BRF (Braille Ready Format) formats. BRF is used with braille notetakers and braille displays. If you wish to emboss braille, it is recommended that you use the DAISY format because it can be edited.

Devices to Use Laptop or Desktop Computer (following the instructions previously provided for signing up, downloading software, searching for and downloading books). Victor Reader Soft Bookshare Edition

Once the program has been installed, you will notice its icon on your desktop:

When you open the program, this is what you should see:

Notice there was a smaller window containing the path to which your downloads have been saved, as well as the list of other materials that are in your Bookshelf. Select the book you wish to open. You will be prompted to enter your download password. Then click “OK.”

The program will load the book. The contents of the book appears to the left. The book is on the right hand side of the screen.

On the top of the page, under settings, you can change the display. You can manipulate the font style. Choose Standard, Inverse Video, or Large Red. After making your choice, click on Apply.

You can also change the Audio under settings. This is where you can select the Text to Speech voice (TTS Settings). The options are:

Across the top in the middle, to the right of “find,” you have options for (from left to right) rewind, play, fast forward, volume, and speed. The Find box enables you to search for a word.

This shows how to make font size adjustments.

To the left of the traffic signal, enter a page number, and it will jump to that page.

Let’s say you need to remember where you stopped, on page 50. Highlight the page number, go to Annotations, go to Insert bookmark.

A window pops up that looks like this:

Assign the page number as the annotation number, and click OK.

If there is a word you want to go back to and look up, highlight it by going to Annotations  Highlight  Insert highlight

Again, assign the page number as the annotation number and click OK.

To add a text note, highlight where you want to place it. Go to Annotations  Text note  Insert text note Assign the page number as the annotation number again.

When you click OK, a window will pop up where you can enter the information you want to include in the note.

To review what you have entered, go to the left side of the screen, click on the Annotations tab. All of the annotations will be displayed.

Click on one of those to go back to it. Your bookmarks, highlights and text notes will be saved when you close and re-open the book. Additional tutorials are available on the Bookshare website under Help  Training.

Read:OutLoud The video learning guide for Read:OutLoud can be found below, and demonstrates downloading a NIMAC textbook. http://assets.bookshare.org/guides/read- with-ROL/lib/playback.html

Bookshare on the iPad Read2Go is the application used to read Bookshare books on the iPad, iPad Touch & iPhone. It costs $19.99. You must be a member to download copyrighted content Opens to the Bookshelf screen. Select Settings from the bottom. This is where you sign in with your user name and password.

Settings is also where you can adjust Font Size, Visual Settings (foreground, background, highlighting, bookmarks, images, etc.), Audio Settings (voice, speed, etc.).

By choosing the Search option at the bottom, you can decide how you want to find your books in a way that is similar to how you used this function with your computer/laptop. You can browse by the latest books, popular books, categories and periodicals. Once the download is completed, which is very quickly, I can choose to read it now or later.

To read it now, I find the play button at the bottom of the screen. If I want to find a particular part of the book, I touch the icon on the top that looks like a bulleted list and choose where I wish to go from there. If I touch the flag to the right of that, I can set a bookmark. I can also change the settings with the gear icon without leaving the book I am reading. Rocket Boys will now automatically appear on my Bookshelf.

What if you have an Android device? GoRead is the reader application to download for Android devices. It is free! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.benetech.android

Another cool thing to do (if you don’t have Read2Go): Now, go to Bookshare’s website. Search for Pride and Prejudice (without logging in). Click on the Globe icon. Proceed to read it using voiceover.

Another device that can be used with Bookshare: Bookport Plus (available with Quota Funds) Supports these file types: Braille (brf), Microsoft Word doc and.docx, HTML, Text, Daisy 2.x, Daisy 3.x, Web radio playlists including pls, m3u, and asx, Podcast feeds (opml), Audible.com, mp3, wav, ogg, Wav, wma, AMR WB+

Notes on the BPP: Your new best friend is the “*” key, which cancels an action The device can be charged either through the adaptor or while connected to the computer In the latter case, when you first connect it, it is recognized as a removable device- use the “Safely Remove Hardware” option but DO NOT disconnect it and it will charge

The round Play/Stop key and the ↓ function as “Enter” keys To find out what a key’s function/s is/are, press the “Menu” key for 5 seconds and then the key you want to learn about, deactivate by pressing the Menu key for 5 seconds again. 0 (zero) opens the User Guide; press again to exit

How do you transfer files to it? Via the Book Transfer program- comes on CD or can be downloaded from APH http://tech.aph.org/bt_info.htm http://tech.aph.org/bt_info.htm Click on “Download PC Software.” You can simply connect the BPP with the long USB cable. It shows up as a removable drive. Copy & paste files/folders using Windows Commands. Copy & paste directly onto the SD card

If you don’t have a computer, you can use the shorter cable with a USB/travel/thumb/pen drive. After connecting the cable to both devices, turn the BPP on, press Title Key until it says “USB Media,” find the book by navigating with the left or right arrow, open the title, press Menu again, use the arrow keys again until you hear it say “Backup,” press “Enter,” after confirmation message press enter. Remove device when done. BPP must be paused or off Don’t transfer.zip files!

Another device that can be used to access Bookshare materials is the Victor Reader Stream (not available with Quota Funds) This device, in my opinion, is a bit more complex to operate, although it has some additional capabilities, such as being able to connect a cd player or NLS (National Library Service) cartridge to it. Here is a description: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2r8kf6VV lk&feature=related

Final thoughts… Not only do you want to learn how to do this for your students, BUT... they need to be empowered to do be able to do this for themselves! Declaration of Independence

This concludes the Digital Device Bunch presentation Aside from the resource spreadsheet, all other materials were found online. www.aph.org www.bookshare.org www.youtube.com http://www.apple.com/accessibility/ipad/ vision.html Thank you all for your time and attention!
