Objective SWBAT solve rational equations. SWBAT solve rational equations. In your notebook, solve for x. In your notebook, solve for x.

Section 12.7 “Solve Rational Equations” A RATIONAL EQUATION is an equation that contains one or more rational expressions. One method for solving a rational equation is to use the cross products property. (You can use this method when both sides of the equation are single rational expressions).

Cross multiply Solve the equation. Check your solution. EXAMPLE 1 Check for extraneous solutions y = 5 y = -3

Another way to solve a rational equation is to CLEAR the equation by multiplying the WHOLE EQUATION by the LCD of the fractions. The resulting equation is equivalent to the original equation WITHOUT fractions.

Two-step equation. Solve for x. Find LCD of all fractions in the equation, then multiply the whole equation by the LCD. Solving Equations by Clearing Fractions Use distributive property and simplify each term of the equation. Remember this???

Multiply by LCD Solve the equation. Check your solution. EXAMPLE 2 Check for extraneous solutions x = 2 LCD=5(x – 2) The solution appears to be 2, but when 2 is substituted for x, the expressions become undefined. Therefore there is no solution.

Factor to find LCD Solve the equation. Check your solution. EXAMPLE 3 LCD=(x – 7)(x – 2)

Check for extraneous solutions x = 0 Solve the equation. Check your solution. EXAMPLE 3 x = 6

Try it out…Solve the equation.
