Section 2-5: Absolute Value Functions and Graphs Objective: To graph absolute value functions

Absolute Value Functions f(x) = |mx + b|+ c, where m ≠ 0 The vertex of a function is a point where the functions reaches a maximum or minimum. Generally, the vertex of f(x) = |mx + b|+ c is at:

Graphing Absolute Value Functions Graph y = |3x + 12| To do this find the vertex: There is no c in this equation, so c = 0. Our vertex is at (-4, 0)

Graphing Absolute Value Functions Now, create a table of a values by selecting two values greater than your x-coordinate of the vertex and two values lesser than your x- coordinate: x valuesy values -66 -53 -40 -33 -26

Graphing Absolute Value Functions The table of values creates a set of ordered pairs: (-6, 6) (-5, 3) (-4, 0) (-3, 3) (-2, 6) Graph those ordered pairs x valuesy values -66 -53 -40 -33 -26

     #1 Plot the points #2 Connect the dots from left to right

Graph y = -|3x + 4| +6 Press the Y = button. Next to Y1= Type: -abs(3x+4)+6 Using Your Calculator
