4 The Indians believed no one owned land and no tribe had the right to sell territory to white settlers. The “Great Spirit” made land for all people to use. Natives should not give up their land to the Americans because both cultures can peacefully live together. For instance, in the reading “Tecumseh, the Shooting Star,” the Indian movement for unity; “the Prophet’s” idea could bring both sides together to build strong national pride for western land.(History Alive Textbook) Therefore, white settlers and Indians would have an “open door” to live together and share cultural customs and beliefs. American government broke many treaties in which western land was promised to the Indians. As settlers moved west they raided and burned Indian villages. Natives should stand firm and fight the settlers for their way of life because American government failed to honor treaties. With this in mind, Indians were forced to sign the Treaty of Greenville and give up the Ohio territory to white settlement (History Alive Textbook). Therefore Indians feel cheated and cannot trust the American government. Lead, Claim (both sides), Because, Reason, Evidence (citation), Analysis
