1 Situational Writing A Problem-Based Learning Approach A Problem-Based Learning Approach

2 Recall… Many situational writing questions pose you with a problem which you are required to analyze and resolve As a result, besides testing your language ability, it is also a test of your ability to solve a problem. This set of skills is referred to as Problem-Based Learning.

3 Structure of thoughts in a PBL process Identifying the task Problem analysis and learning issues Discovery and reporting Solution presentation and reflection

4 Step 1 – Identifying the task As with all problems, we will be unable to begin how to solve them unless we are clear what are we supposed to do. This is known as your TASK. Based on the example given, what is the overall task? List it down.

5 Step 2 – Problem analysis and learning issues Based of the information given, identify the problems that are encountered and the issues that have to be solved This will help you identify the criteria.

6 Step 3 – Discovery and reporting As you have identified the criteria, you will start your discovery stage when probably solutions start to form in your mind. It might be a trial and error process as your start to filter through your choices through discovery and reporting.

7 Step 4 Solution Presentation and Reflection As you narrow down your options based on the criteria set, you will eventually shortlist one option which is closest to meeting all your criteria. (Remember, it does not have to meet ALL your criteria but it has to be the best available option you have that is closest to your objectives). As you present your solution, you will then reflect on your choice and whether it has fulfilled your task.
