Animal Farm By George Orwell

Skills for this novel After reading Animal Farm, you will be able to… Identify and use effective arguments through logos, ethos, pathos. Understand allegory and the historical context surrounding the novel.

Ethos, Pathos, Logos Ethos- an ethical argument Pathos- an emotional argument Logos-a logical argument

Ethos When using ethos, the speaker establishes credibility, otherwise known as trustworthiness or expertise on the subject. Ethos is an important angle to take when writing because when we believe the speaker is an expert and does not intend to harm us, we are more willing to listen and be persuaded. Example: When a trusted doctor gives you advice, you may not understand all of the reasoning behind the advice, but you follow the directions because you know the doctor is an expert and is trustworthy.

Pathos When someone uses pathos, or an emotional argument, he/she attempts to make its audience accept a claim based on how it makes them feel without analyzing the rationale behind the claim. Look for emotionally charged (very positive or negative) words when identifying pathos. Pathos may persuade with fear, love, patriotism, guilt hate or joy.

Logos Logos refers to any attempt to appeal to logic or intellect. The argument relies on reasoning and facts to prove the claim. Numbers, polls, and statistics are also examples. Arguments tend to be strongest when they incorporate all three techniques!

As you read Animal Farm… *As you read, annotate (or text mark) for logos, ethos, and pathos. These devices will only occur in dialogue, as they are meant to persuade. Since the general point of the novel is to entertain, narration, or text outside of the dialogue, will not have these characteristics. *video for more reinforcement

"After years of this type of disrespect from your boss, countless hours wasted, birthdays missed… it’s time that you took a stand."

I deserve the position because I have worked faithfully for the past 30 years. I always go above and beyond what is expected of me. I was even selected as “Employee of the Month.”

According to a study by CNN, 28% of teenagers report that they could manage without a TV.

"My three decades of experience in public service, my tireless commitment to the people of this community, and my willingness to reach across the aisle and cooperate with the opposition, make me the ideal candidate for your mayor."

"More than one hundred peer-reviewed studies have been conducted over the past decade, and none of them suggests that this is an effective treatment for hair loss."

"Better men than us have fought and died to preserve this great nation. Now is our turn to return the favor. For God and country, gentlemen!"

"Don’t be the last person on the block to have their lawn treated – you don’t want to be the laughing stock of your community!"

"Private demand for the product has tapered off for the past three years, and this year’s sales figures are at an all-time low. It’s time to research other options."

"The veterinarian says that an Australian shepherd will be the perfect match for our active lifestyle."

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury: we have not only the fingerprints, the lack of an alibi, a clear motive, and an expressed desire to commit the robbery… We also have video of the suspect breaking in. The case could not be more open and shut."

"Research compiled by analysts from NASA, as well as organizations from five other nations with space programs, suggests that a moon colony is viable with international support."
