3. School Historical Background The Cascara School opened in 1893 and was renamed Sidney Sherman in 1906 for a Kentuckian who headed an army of volunteers in the battle against Santa Anna. Sidney Sherman has been credited with the battle cry, "Remember the Alamo." The original structure which was the second- oldest school in the city, it was demolished and rebuilt in 1967.
