School Historical Background The Cascara School opened in 1893 and was renamed Sidney Sherman in 1906 for a Kentuckian who headed an army of volunteers in the battle against Santa Anna. Sidney Sherman has been credited with the battle cry, "Remember the Alamo." The original structure which was the second- oldest school in the city, it was demolished and rebuilt in 1967.

School Achievement Sherman Elementary is “Recognized” as stated by the Texas Education Agency for the 2010-2011 school year. We will strive to obtain the the EXEMPLARY status by focusing on student learning and achievement. Teachers will teachers will use the HISD Curriculum which is aligned with the TEKS. Differentiate instruction will be based upon the children’s instructional needs, benchmarks, and assessment results. Teachers will be encouraged to participate in meaningful professional development to support their teaching practices.

Title I As a Title I school, Sherman has established the following programs to encourage parental involvement at a school-wide level. –Monthly Parent Meetings “Second Cup of Coffee” –Seasonal Programs –Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) –Walk For Success –Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) –Open House –Math and Reading Family Nights –Grade Level Award Ceremonies

Federal Reserve Bank Sherman Elementary will celebrate its 24 th year partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank. The bank allows its employees to serve as tutors, mentors, and volunteers in the school to help improve student achievement.
