The Election of 1800 Federalists- John Adams vs. Democratic Republicans – Thomas Jefferson

Each party thought the other was endangering the welfare of the country! Federalists charged the Dem/Rep as being godless, because they believed in freedom of religion. Republicans warned that Federalists would bring back a monarchy, and only would represent the interests of the wealthy people with property.

When the votes were tallied….. A TIE!!!! T.J. – 73, Aaron Burr 73! According to the Constitution, the House of Representatives would break the tie. – At the time, votes were cast for each person individually as president or vice president, not as a team. – After 35 voting sessions, Thomas Jefferson becomes 3 rd President of the United States!

To Prevent this from ever happening again… Congress passes the Twelfth Amendment in 1803 – This amendment requires electors to vote for the president and vice president on separate ballots.

Jefferson’s Policies The People’s President – Wore everyday clothes to inauguration – Laissez faire policy – government “hands off” – limited government involvement – Advocated state’s rights – Reduce power and size of federal government – large federal government threatens liberty
