2 Chapter 1 - Moving Writing to the Front Burner ❖ have real world purposes Writing in the classroom should: ❖ be modeled by teachers ❖ include mentor texts for students to emulate ❖ give kids time to stretch themselves as writers

3 Chapter 1 - Moving Writing to the Front Burner The six purposes for writing: ➔ Express and Reflect ➔ Inform and Explain ➔ Evaluate and Judge ➔ Inquire and Explore ➔ Analyze and Interpret ➔ Take a Stand / Propose a Solution There are other purposes for writing than those emphasized in this book. (see chapter 9)

4 Chapter 2 - Express and Reflect The best student writing is both expressive and reflective. Expressive Writing ●personal ●thoughts, feelings, ideas and questions ●first person ●author’s voice Reflective Writing ●shows how experience shaped writer ●author looks to the past to help shape the future ●vehicle for exploring new thoughts Activities include six word memoir, sentence starters, and reverse poems

5 Chapter 3 - Inform and Explain Writing to inform and explain is not just for school, but for real life. Examples ●writing to cancel a service ●explaining an accident to an insurance company ●writing directions for the babysitter This chapter focuses on how writing is a necessary skill for all people. Activities include top ten lists, job hunting and college collage.

6 Chapter 4 - Evaluate and Judge Purpose: ●“avalanche of consumerism” ●real world implications ●practice evaluative skills for literature

7 Chapter 5 - Inquire and Explore 1. “The very act of writing creates new thinking...” (Gallagher 116). ● “In exploratory writing, the writer often wrestles with a question or a problem, which may or may not lead the writer to research a topic in more depth” (Gallagher 118). from James Madison’s The Federalist Papers

8 Inquire & Explore Activity Common Idioms: 1. Break the ice 2. Throw the book at someone 3. Make hay while the sun shines 4. As mad as a hatter 5. 9 Chapter 6 - Analyze and Interpret Purpose: Moving students into analysis and interpretation Provide ample opportunities to analyze and interpret the real world Examples: Who Is to Blame, Jump the Shark, Interpret Song Lyrics, iMAgiNiff

10 Chapter 7 - Take a Stand / Propose a Solution Purpose: ★ Confronting serious problems and knowing both sides of the issue ★ Use skills to generate innovative and thoughtful solutions ★ Examples: Five You Can Do to ______, Newspaper Hunt, Rank Problems

11 Chapter 8 - Polishing the Paper  All first drafts are usually lousy  Turning lousy writing into better writing is the hard part  Move student writing under the RADaR (R=replace, A=add, D=delete, R=reorder)  Use sentences of the week based on carefully reading student’s writing

12 Chapter 9 - The Wizard of Oz Would Have Been a Lousy Writing Teacher Gallagher Outlines Core Beliefs in Writing: 1.Writing teachers must model for their students...not hide behind a curtain Like the Wizard of Oz. 2.Scaffolding through the emulation of other writers is necessary for growth. 3.Building background knowledge is essential to growth for young writers (Article of the Week) 4.Your first idea is not always your best idea.

13 Chapter 9 - The Wizard of Oz Would Have Been a Lousy Writing Teacher Gallagher Outlines Core Beliefs in Writing: 1.No such thing as a five paragraph essay but what they do need is beginning, middle, end, thesis, clear purpose and recognized audience, and credible support 2.Students need more deliberate practice in writing 3.Students need to write by hand...important skill 4.Focus on what is right in their writing and what is not 5.The book does not show all of the writing purposes 6.Sometimes it is necessary to blend the purposes of writing
