Solving Multi-Step Equations Using Inverse Operations
2
Example 1: If x had a value (10, for example) what would you do to simplify that side of the equation using the order of operations? x -17 To solve for x, you work backwards using inverse operations to get the x by itself.
3
Example 2: b 12
4
Example 3: h -3 To solve for h, you work backwards using inverse operations to get the h by itself.
5
Example 4: m -47 To solve for m, you work backwards using inverse operations to get the m by itself.
6
Example 5: p -21 To solve for p, you work backwards using inverse operations to get the p by itself.
7
Example 6: w 16 To solve for w, you work backwards using inverse operations to get the w by itself.
8
Example 7: a 20 Before isolating the variable, look to see if either side of the equation can be simplified first.
