Flotation Physics February 22/23

Will It Float? Read section 19.4 and 19.5 Also, consider what we have already studied See if you can list the reasons why an object will float

An object floats if: 1.Buoyant force larger than downward force of weight 2.An object is less dense than liquid it’s in 3.The weight of the displaced fluid equals the weight of the object (related to buoyant force) 1.Principle of flotation

Who Cares?! How do iron ships float? – The design and engineers – Made to displace a lot of water so that the weight of the displaced fluid is equal to or greater than the weight of the ship – This way, the buoyant force is bigger than weight of ship and it can float

Your Task Get the clay to float How many pennies can you float on the foil?

Class work Check for Understanding What determines liquid pressure? What factor does buoyant force play in whether an object floats? How does density play a role flotation?

Closing Write a paragraph using the following terms: 1.Pressure 2.Depth 3.Density 4.Buoyant force 5.Floating

Homework Study for Quiz on chapter 19 – Liquid and Atmospheric Pressure Bernoulli’s principle – Buoyancy and buoyant Force Definitions and solving – Archimedes principle – Flotation
