After the death of Joshua, the age of _______________ began. Judges

The book that records the struggles of the Israelites after they enter the Promised Land is ____________. Judges

Throughout the Book of Judges, the pattern of life of Israelites was that of failing and beginning again. What was the pattern of life of Israelites in the Promised Land?

They violated the first commandment. Israelites made many mistakes. Instead, they idolized the false god, __________, just as their Canaanite neighbor did. Baal

Once in danger to invading tribes, Israelites realized that they had been unfaithful to God. They prayed for God’s forgiveness and protection.

Did God answer their prayers? Were these Judges usually sitting in courtrooms? God sent leaders to save them called as ______________. Judges These Judges were usually military leaders of their tribes who were respected for their victories.

God gave these Judges a gift called ______________, which is a special gift of God given to a person for the good of others, such as charisms that help the Judges defeat Israel’s enemies. charism

Judges 3:12-30 12 Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the L ORD. What step are the Israelites repeating? The Israelites committed a sin again.

Sin damages our relationship with ________, with other _______, and even our ________. God people selves

(page 100, Textbook) We have committed a _________ sin if We have done something that seriously wrong, We knew it was seriously wrong, and We freely and willingly chose to do it. mortal

________ sin, lesser sin, is a choice we make that weakens our relationship with God or with other people. Through our participation in the ___________, the sacrament in which we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to be in union with Jesus Christ’s saving Death and Resurrection, venial sin is forgiven, strengthening our relationship with God and with others. Venial Eucharist

(page 100) Why is it good to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation even when we haven’t committed mortal sin? It heals sin’s wounds. It helps us grow strong against temptation. It helps us do God’s will and know ourselves better, and It helps us grow more like Jesus.

Like the Israelites, many people today find that they commit the same sins repeatedly. This is especially so if they have years of bad habits to overcome.

A ____________ is something that a person does often in a regular and repeated way. habit

A habit is an activity that has been started by a person and then is done regularly or repeatedly, quite often as an automatic process and is found challenging to stop.

When someone has this habitual behavior they may not realize they are actually doing it. This is because it has become so routine in their life that it has become a sub-conscious activity.

From the earliest years of our life we all have taken on habits.

We can have good and bad habits.

We need to examine all the activities in our life to identify which are bad habits. __________ habits are anything which is seen as a negative behavior or undesirable, that can lead us to commit _______. Bad sin

Good habits can lead us to develop virtues that we should live by. Beatitudes challenge us to be people of _____________ (a firm attitude, mind-set, or disposition to do good). VIRTUE

SinVirtue LustLust (impure acts)ChastityChastity (purity) GluttonyGluttony (over-indulgence) TemperanceTemperance (self- control/self-discipline) GreedGreed (avarice - extreme greed for wealth or material gain) CharityCharity (giving) SlothSloth (laziness/idleness)DiligenceDiligence (zeal/industry) WrathWrath (anger) Forgiveness Forgiveness (compassion/mercy) EnvyEnvy (jealousy)KindnessKindness (admiration) PridePride (self-glorification, vanity- excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements) HumilityHumility (humbleness)

Some people describe themselves by listing their character traits and habits – as though this is what they are and it can’t be changed.

But we should always remember that habits do not control us but rather we control the habits.

So good habits can be learned and bad habits unlearned.

Why do you need to completely remove the bad habits in your life? We need to completely remove bad habits from our lives so that they don’t drag us down.

Once we have identified it we then need to remove it or change it - this way the temptation is no longer there that turns our heart from God, leading us to sin.

The apostle Paul writes about the struggle between a mind which wants to serve God and a sinful nature which just keeps on sinning.

22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Volunteer please to read Romans 7:22-24.

Repeated sin can be an indication that the person hasn’t really repented, and is only saying that they repent.

Repeated sin is a sign that you have a particular weakness to that sort of temptation.

Of considerable help in overcoming these sins and improving life in general is to develop good habits like prayer reading the Bible regularly attending the Mass regularly going to confession regularly

What are four ways we can be reconciled with God when we’ve sinned? (Page 99)  Pray an Act of Contrition  Pray or do an Act of Love  Celebrate the Eucharist, or  The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation

Romans 7:21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So Jesus’ blood is powerful enough to wash away ALL our sins. But we must repent sincerely.

What did Israelites learn through their sins? Even if they were weak, unfaithful, the Lord remained faithful, forgiving, and loving.

Which reason shows what we call perfect contrition? Act of Contrition O, my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you. I detest all my sins because of your just punishment, but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin.

We should be sorry for our sins because we love God.

Perfect contrition is Praying an act of contrition and really meaning it.

If we are truly sorry for our sins, we will not want to commit them again.

Prayer (Good and Bad Habits)
