2 PROBLEM AND SOLUTION Depending upon the text, the reader could find one problem with one solution or one problem with multiple solutions. We will be looking at examples during the course of the year.

3 PROBLEM AND SOLUTION TEXT Clearly explains the problem and possible solutions. Defends or explains the solutions using facts and examples. The author can use problem/solution organizational structure to be persuasive (defends the solutions). The author argues for a specific solution. The author can use problem/solution organizational structure to share information (explain the solutions) and let the reader make his/her own decision.

6 Problem Solution to persuade A student has a homework assignment and doesn’t understand what to do. E-mail the teacher and ask the question. Good: He will get the information straight from the person grading him. Bad: The teacher may not be able to respond to his e-mail in time. Call a responsible friend from the class. Good: He still has a chance to get his homework done. Bad: His homework may not earn him a good grade if his friend is confused also. Don’t do the homework. Good: He can play more video games. Bad: He’ll get a fail for the day. The best solution is to call a responsible friend(s) and try the homework because…..
