3 What is a Goal? Something a person intends to accomplish

4 Why Should You Set Goals? Would you drive from Ohio to Kansas City without a road map? Probably not (Unless you didn’t care where you ended up) Setting Goals is like using a road map....or GPS... Goals Provide Direction for you Goals help you to focus on what’s important Goals require you to keep the end in mind

5 Some Things Famous People Say About Goal Setting.... If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else. -Yogi Berra In the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia. - Unknown Most people aim at nothing in life and hit it with amazing accuracy. -Jim Cathcart If you’re bored with life - you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things - you don’t have enough goals. -Lou Holtz

6 Different Types of Goals SHORT TERM A goal set to be accomplished within one year Examples: Improving grades, making a sports team LONG TERM A goal set to be achieved in more than year, but typically less than 5 years Examples: Attending college, Buying a car

7 Different Types of Goals Educational Help individuals prepare for success in the workplace and enables individuals to reach financial goals Include both short and long-term goals that provide guidance and direction. Examples: Earning an A on a quiz, Attending college, Participating in an extra-curricular

8 Different Types of Goals Financial A goal that helps guide financial planning Helps achieve short and long-term goals Examples include: Saving money to pay for a sport/activity you want to join, Saving for a new iPhone

9 SMART Goals In order for goals to be well-written, you should use the following as a guide for writing goals SMART goals: Provide direction Allow a person to focus on important things Help to keep the end result in mind

10 For Goals to be SMART.... They should be: Specific State exactly what is to be done Measurable Include how the goal can be measured (amount) Attainable Determine steps to reach the goal Realistic Be sure it is something that you can actually achieve Time-Bound State when the goal will be met

11 SMART? I will go on a diet. SPECIFIC? no MEASURABLE? negative ATTAINABLE? nope REALISTIC? who knows?? TIME-BOUND? no sir

12 SMART? To lower my BMI, I will lose 15 pounds by December 31, 2013 SPECIFIC? Yes-Lose 15 lbs. MEASURABLE? Yes-Compare weight (If you started at 150 lbs., you know your goal is achieved at 135) ATTAINABLE? Yes-Losing 1 lb. every 1.5 weeks REALISTIC? Yes! TIME-BOUND? Yes-By December 31, 2013

13 Here’s Another.... Goal: I want to by a new iPod Specific: I plan to save for a new iPod Measurable: I plan to save $200 for a new iPod Attainable:...by saving $20 from each babysitting job Realistic:....and putting it into a savings account Time-Bound:...for the next 2.5 months

14 Now, You Do It!!! Using the template at the end of your notes, write one SMART goal for each of the following (Similar to the last slide): Goal 1: This school year (Grades, Attendance, etc.) Goal 2: After you graduate high school (college, career, etc.) Goal 3: Your living situation (moving out, where you want to settle down, etc.) Goal 4: Family Goal (Relationship, your own future family, etc.)
