Cognos 8 Scenarios
14
Customer Scenario 1 Customer has a large data warehouse (star schema) and needs to do analysis Customer reluctant to move data into cubes
15
Scenario 1 - Potential Solutions AdvantagesDisadvantages Use Analysis Studio on star schema data warehouse. Use ROLAP technologies if available (e.g. DB2 Cube Views) to improve performance Create cubes where required for complex calculations and aggregations Use Report Studio when data from DW and cubes needs to be shown together No need to move large amounts of data Reduces latency of information Requires a well designed data warehouse and use of ROLAP technologies which are still emerging (i.e. harder to find skill sets) Create cubes for all analysis and use Analysis Studio Fast performance for the end user Potentially moving large amounts of data will require additional resources and introduce latency Customer will likely complain that they have already invested in getting data into a reportable format in the DW
16
Customer Scenario 2 Customer has a large IT backlog of reports and users have to wait a long time for their reports Customer has a combination of OLTP, star schema and cube data sources
17
Scenario 2 - Potential Solutions AdvantagesDisadvantages Use Query Studio to give users self service to all of the different data sources. Use Report Studio templates to provide better formatting control Provide some users with Report Studio and Analysis Studio Query Studio gives users self service access to all of the customer’s data assets and reduces the reporting backlog Other users with more specific needs get Report Studio and Analysis Studio IT has to support a larger variety of user interfaces Create cubes from OLTP data and provide users with Analysis Studio Provide some users with Report Studio Fewer user interfaces to support Significant work to put all data into a dimensionally modeled relational structure and/or cube Some users will need to format reports and may find it difficult to use Report Studio
18
Comparison of PowerPlay 7 and Analysis Studio Series 7Cognos 8 Access to cubes PowerPlay Web, PowerPlay Windows Analysis Studio, Query Studio and Report Studio, Event Studio Simple slicing and dicing PowerPlay Web, PowerPlay Windows Cognos Viewer (Report Viewer), Query Studio and Analysis Studio Lightly formatted reports from cubes (titles, font control, etc.) PowerPlay Windows Query Studio and Analysis Studio Heavily formatted reports PowerPlay Windows to some extent Report Studio Publish cubesPowerPlay Enterprise ServerFramework Manager Publish reports based off cubes PowerPlay Enterprise Server to PowerPlay Web No publish step
