6 Takeaway Embrace that the church (Jews and Gentiles in Christ) fulfills Zephaniah’s anticipation of a restored Israel in a restored Jerusalem. o The prophets envisioned a remnant from the Gentiles being incorporated into restored Israel (Isa 2:2–3; 56:6–8; Jer 12:14–17; Zech 8:20–23).

7 Isa. 2:2–3. It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, 3 and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant— 7 these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” 8 The Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares, “I will gather yet others to him besides those already gathered.”

9 Jer. 12:14–17. Thus says the LORD concerning all my evil neighbors who touch the heritage that I have given my people Israel to inherit: “Behold, I will pluck them up from their land, and I will pluck up the house of Judah from among them. 15 And after I have plucked them up, I will again have compassion on them, and I will bring them again each to his heritage and each to his land. 16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, ‘As the LORD lives,’ even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they shall be built up in the midst of my people. 17 But if any nation will not listen, then I will utterly pluck it up and destroy it, declares the LORD.”

Thus says the LORD of hosts: Peoples shall yet come, even the inhabitants of many cities. 21 The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, ‘Let us go at once to entreat the favor of the LORD and to seek the LORD of hosts; I myself am going.’ 22 Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the LORD. 23 Thus says the LORD of hosts: In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”

11 Takeaway Embrace that the church (Jews and Gentiles in Christ) fulfills Zephaniah’s anticipation of a restored Israel in a restored Jerusalem. o The prophets envisioned a remnant from the Gentiles being incorporated into restored Israel (Isa 2:2–3; 56:6–8; Jer 12:14–17; Zech 8:20–23). o Isaiah’s servant (= Jesus) is named “Israel” who restores both remnant Israel and some from the nations (Isa 49:1–6).

12 Paul called the church “the Israel of God” (Gal 6:16) and treated Jews and Gentiles in Christ equally as “the seed of Abraham” (3:28–29), one “olive tree” made up of natural and wild branches (Rom 11:17–24), and “one new man” (Eph 2:15). The write of Hebrew stressed that the church is already gathered “to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Heb 12:2

13 Takeaway Seek humility and God-dependence (Zeph 3:12–13; cf. John 3:30; Matt 23:12), and let your rest in and reverence of God and lack of fear of man (Zeph 2:7; 3:13) lead you away from sin (Jer 32:40; Phil 2:12–13).
