The Monster Study BY: Austin Jackson, Jake Zander, Tramaine Brown

2 Biography Wendell Johnson was born in 1906.
He was 20 ears old when he went to collage at the University of Iowa. Went to major in English. Later changed his major to psychology. Had a very strong speech impediment. Wanted to study if stuttering was just a mental block produced as a kid when told they had a stutter. Made a study of 22 orphans and told them they had a stutter (when they didn’t) to see if they developed one. Mary Tudor was a clinical psychologist. She was asked to do the experiment on the kids and to study what happened to the children.

3 The Purpose of the Experiment
The purpose of the experiment is to study to see if kids with no stutter will stutter if you tell them that they have one.

4 Summarizing the Monster study
The people involved were Wendell Johnson and Mary Tudor. The procedures of the experiment were to take 22 orphans and tell them that they had a stutter to see if it was just a mental state that the kids put themselves in when told they had a stutter. It was observed and tested mostly by Mary because she was a clinical psychology. In Devonport, Iowa at the University of Iowa. It was conducted in 1939.

5 Results of the Experiment
Reduced speech for 6 of the subjects. The rate of their speaking was decreased. The length of their replies were longer. They were more aware and embarrassed by it. They accepted the fact that there was something wrong with their speech. Every child reacted to his/her speech interruption in some way.

6 Problems of Experiment
They experimented on young children with no stutter which made them end up developing stutters. Doing this affected them for the rest of their lives. They ended up getting sued because of experimenting on the children.

7 Would We Have Participated in the Experiment
Austin- No, because I did not want to develop a stutter. Jake- No, because I did not want to develop a stutter also. Tramaine-No, because I did not want to develop a stutter.
