SUNDAY, MARCH 2, 2014 Sunday, February 21, 2016 Bartimaeus Healed 2nd Sunday in Lent Holy Communion

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the Lord of Israel who comes to set us free, the mighty Savior who comes toshow mercy, the Dawn from on high who guides us into peace. C:Amen.

 P: There is much that needs forgiving. Let us confess our sins before God and one another. Holy one, our teacher and healer,  C: Too often, we cannot see the forest for the trees. At times, we focus our sight on the things of this world, on glory, on acquisition. Forgive us. At times, we decline to speak out on our own behalf. Forgive us. At times, we are guilty of silencing the voices of those who cry out their need. Forgive us this, too. Jesus Christ, Son of David, have mercy on us. Amen.

 P: It is Christ who frees us from sin, Christ who frees us to see what we previously did not see. In the name of Jesus Christ, know that you are forgiven, and freed to follow him.  C: Amen.

P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. (Please greet each other in peace)

P:The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C:And also with you.

P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. P: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy.

For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen.

P: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. C: Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer of the Day P: Let us pray. Glorious one, C: help us to focus on your glory and not our own. Help us to discern when to speak aloud, and when to be quiet and listen to what you have to say to us. We pray this in Jesus name, Amen.

7 For thus says the LORD: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, "Save, O LORD, your people, the remnant of Israel." 8 See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with

child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9 With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

L 1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. C: 2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. Then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” L: 3 The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad indeed.

C: 4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses of the Negeb. L: 5 Those who sowed with tears will reap with songs of joy. C: 6 Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.

Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

P: The holy gospel according to Mark. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying,

"See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; 34 they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise again."

35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." 36 And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" 37 And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory."

38 But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" 39 They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;

40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.“ 41 When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42 So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among

you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.“ 46 They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside.

47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" 49 Jesus stood still and said, "Call him here." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you."

50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again." 52 Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

 Refrain Jesu, fill us with your love, show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you. 1 Kneels at the feet of his friends, silently washes their feet, master who acts as a slave to them. Refrain

2 Neighbors are wealthy and poor, varied in color and race, neighbors are near us and far away. Refrain  Refrain Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love, show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you.

3 These are the ones we will serve, these are the ones we will love; all these are neighbors to us and you. Refrain  Refrain Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love, show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you.

 4 Kneel at the feet of our friends, silently washing their feet: this is the way we will live with you. Refrain  Refrain Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love, show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you.

 I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will  come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Response following each prayer petition: O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer: when I call, answer me. O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer: come and listen to me.

OFFERTORY “Create in Me...” (Red Hymnal #188) Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit.

P: God of abundance, C: we bring before you the precious fruits of your creation, and with them our very lives. Teach us patience and hope as we care for all those in need until the coming of your Son, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

 P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that, renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow'r and might: Heav'n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy God, the Beginning and the End, our Salvation and our Hope, we praise you for creating a world of order and beauty. When we brought on chaos, cruelty and despair, you sent the prophets to proclaim your justice and mercy. At this end of the ages your Son Jesus came to bring us your love and to heal all the suffering world.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his life, death, and resurrection, we await his coming again in righteousness and peace. Send your Spirit on us and on this bread and wine we share: strengthen our faith, increase our hope, and bring to birth the justice and joy of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen

Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

P: God fills the hungry with good things. Taste and see that the Lord is good. COMMUNION

P: Holy One, we give you thanks that in this bread and cup we have feasted again on your endless love. C: Let that love overflow more and more in our lives, that we may be messengers to prepare your way, harvesters of justice and righteousness, and bearers of your eternal Word, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

May God direct your ways in peace, make you abound in love for one another and for all, and strengthen your hearts until the coming of our Lord Jesus. Almighty God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen.

P: Go in peace. Christ is with you. C: Thanks be to God.
