1 Friday, April 17 th / Monday, April 20 th : Agenda: Born in the USA Read The Things They Carried Homework: Write the Chapter 1 Reflection: What is the literal meaning of the things these men carried? What is the symbolic meaning? Considering what you heard from our panel of veterans, how realistic is the impact of war as depicted ? Lastly, what are those things you carry in your life?

2 Born in the USA Objective: I will analyze the poetic devices and the social commentary of a song. 1.With someone else who has the same assignment as you, answer the questions that go along with the song. 2. Listen to the song. 3. Write the reflection. Reflection: Everyone: What does it mean to you to be born in the USA? Think back to our discussion at the very beginning of the year that asked what it meant to be an American. Honors: Does the speaker’s tone (attitude toward the subject) fit or challenge what you predicted before you heard it? According to the song, is the theory different from the reality? Integrated A: How effective are songs in shaping the way people feel about important issues? Use this song as an example. According to the song, what does it mean to be born in the USA? Is this different from what it should be? Integrated B: According to this song, to be born into the USA means ______________ as seen in _____________ and _________ from the song. These examples show that America is/is not (circle one) giving the Vietnam Veterans access to the five ideals because ____________________________.

3 The Things They Carried Objective: Today I will read a historical fiction memoir that will give me an unique perspective of the Vietnam War. Define: 1.historical fiction: a literary genre (kind) in which the setting, characters, and plot of a real historical event are told through the imagination of the author. It’s a blend of fact and fiction. 1.memoir: a historical account or biography written from personal experience.

4 The Things They Carried Objective: Today I will read a historical fiction memoir that will give me an unique perspective of the Vietnam War. Activity: Take down notes to define each character’s personality, hopes, and fears. Characters include: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Dave Jensen, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Rat Kiley, Kiowa, Ted Lavender, and Lee Strunk. Compare and contrast these boys so far to those in Flags.
