4 Purposes in Developing a Handbook  Provide a common language for our classroom teachers and ESOL team  Help target support for teachers in addressing the needs of ESL students  Gather our resources into one easily accessible reference guide for staff  Grow professionally through our collective efforts and contributions each person made in the process

5 Process in Developing a Handbook  What are the topics or questions that classroom teachers typically ask regarding ELLs?  Place 1 topic or question per post-it note.  Are you able to cluster the topics or questions into categories? Record your categories onto chart paper and reorganize your post-it notes into those categories.

6 Process in Developing a Handbook Key Understandings Getting to Know Your Student Planning for Instruction Assessing What Students Know Questions?

8 Process for Using with Staff Just the Facts Identification, Services Interact with Text Acronyms, Myths, Culture, Video Samples Deeper Focus Can do Descriptors & Level of Progress Planning for Instruction Assessing What Students Know

9 A Deeper Focus...  Examine the four domains for your student – Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing (and Overall)  Refer to Can Do Descriptors on pages 46-55 (for your grade cluster)  Using proficiency levels, find out what your student currently Can Do as a listener, speaker, reader, writer of English  Look ahead at the next level to see where you might stretch students in instruction  What did you learn about your student?

10 A Deeper Focus...  Consider the standard you are planning.  Think about how you would scaffold instruction using what you know about the student’s proficiency levels. SOLStandard Math 3.18 The student will investigate and describe the concept of probability as chance and list possible results of a given situation. Civics CE.2 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the foundations of American constitutional government by a) explaining the fundamental principles of consent of the governed, limited government, rule of law, democracy, and representative government. Earth Science ES.3 The student will investigate and understand the characteristics of Earth and the solar system. Key concepts include: b) sun-Earth-moon relationships (seasons, tides, and eclipses).

11 Next Steps...  Deepen instructional strategies with teachers through additional training (Title III funds)  Annually update/ review resources; maintain updates electronically (with notes of updates)  Maintain a Google site for resources that are needed among ESOL team  Begin process for more comprehensive parent packet for ELL students
