1 Water and Its Properties

2 Properties of Water Highly Polar Bonds that are asymmetrically dispersed (bond angle is 105°) around molecule so the whole molecule is polar. –Hydrogen bond formation between molecules High surface tension/cohesion Low vapor pressure High specific heat capacity High heat of vaporization High boiling point Paper Chromatography Lab

3 Q.O.D: Why Does Ice Float? Each water molecule lines up specifically with another molecule so form one hydrogen bond between another molecule and on the same plane. This creates a hexagonal shape that traps air causing the solid ice to have a lower density making it float.

4 Aqueous Solutions Solvents and Solutes –Water does the dissolving so solvent, every thing being dissolved is the solute Electrolytes and Non Electrolytes –Can conduct electricity when in aqueous solution vs. can not conduct electricity when in aqueous solution. Hydrates –Compounds that have a certain number of water molecules bonded (hydrogen bond) to each molecule/formula unit.
