Staying in Harmony with the Gospel

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel

Galatians 2:14 14 …I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel…

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:1-14 1 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. 2 I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:1-14 3 But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 4 Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— 5 to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:1-14 6 And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:1-14 7 On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised 8 (for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles)…

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:1-14 9 …and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:1-14 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:1-14 13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:1-14 14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Acts 10:9-16 9 The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. 10 And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance 11 and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Acts 10:9-16 12 In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” 15 And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.” 16 This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Acts 10:28 28 And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean.”

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Acts 10:48 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Acts 11:2-3 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, 3 “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:11-12 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch… 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself...

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 2:11 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.

The fear of men is out of step with the gospel

Galatians 2:12 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.

The fear of men is out of step with the gospel 2 Timothy 1:7 7 …for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

The fear of men is out of step with the gospel Romans 8:31-34 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

The fear of men is out of step with the gospel Hebrews 13:6 6 So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Hypocrisy is out of step with the gospel

Galatians 2:13 13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy is out of step with the gospel Luke 12:1-9 1 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

Hypocrisy is out of step with the gospel Luke 12:1-9 4 “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Hypocrisy is out of step with the gospel Luke 12:1-9 8 “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, 9 but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.”

Binding where God has not bound is out of step with the gospel

Galatians 2:14-21 14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Binding where God has not bound is out of step with the gospel Galatians 2:14-21 15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

Binding where God has not bound is out of step with the gospel Galatians 2:14-21 17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God.

Binding where God has not bound is out of step with the gospel Galatians 2:14-21 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

Nullifying the grace of God is out of step with the gospel Galatians 2:21 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

Nullifying the grace of God is out of step with the gospel Galatians 2:21 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. atheto (Greek) to reject; to regard as invalid

Nullifying the grace of God is out of step with the gospel Galatians 2:21 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. atheto (Greek) to reject; to regard as invalid Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

“What is the gospel?” 1. A definite PLAN. 2. An EVENT in history. 3. A divine ACHIEVEMENT. 4. An OFFER to all. 5. An imitative RESPONSE. 6. A reoriented, God- centered LIFE.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 3:23-29 23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.

Staying “in Step” with the Gospel Galatians 3:23-29 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
