2 EASTERN WOODLANDS REGION A lot of rain Covered in forests

3 FOOD Had many options from the forests for food Examples Deer Bear Rabbit Wild Rice Syrup from maple tree sap (in the north)

4 Farming was important For room tribes would cut down larger trees and burn the area Planted the “three sisters” Corn – supported vines from the bean plants Beans – used corn to help grow Squash – big leaves helped keep weeds from spreading

5 HOUSES North Longhouses made of wood and bark Whole families lived together Provided protection from the cold South Houses made with no walls Protection from the rain and sun Stayed warm all year long CLOTHES North Made of deerskin Offered protection from the cold South Made from grasses Very light because of warmth

7 HAUDENOSAUNEE (IROQUOIS) Made of up 6 tribal nations in present day New York Mohawks Oneidas Onondagas Cayugas Senecas Tuscaroras 6 nations formed a confederation called Haudenosaunee League

8 HAUDENOSAUNEE GOVERNMENT Each chief controlled his own nation Chiefs would meet at league meetings to discuss decisions All chiefs had to agree before any action Clan mothers Oldest women of tribe Chose the chief of each nation Could replace the chief if needed

9 TRADING SYSTEM Wampum – carefully shaped and cut seashells Used as a type of money among tribes in the woodlands Barter – trade Natives traded furs and blankets for knives and other goods
