Introduction What is this act? The LOLER regulations came into force and was applied to all equipment used in Lifting Operations. For example with engineering, this means climbing equipment, lowering equipment, and lifting platforms. Essentially the regulations require equipment lifting people etc.

Purpose of Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment regulations Why do we need this regulation? This is needed for any company that uses lifting equipment whether they own the equipment or borrowed it. This is so if anyone has to lift anything heavy, this act is there for it.

Limitations People are entitled to lift equipment to as heavy as they think is right, if they think something is too heavy to lift then they are entitled to say “No” to lifting what needs to be.

Inspections LOLER inspections are used to make sure equipment is safe to use in the working environment, and suitable for the job it is used for. The equipment in the workplace should be on a daily basis and not left until the inspection.

Covered equipment Lifting equipment includes any equipment used at work for lifting or lowering loads, including attachments used for anchoring, fixing or supporting it. The Regulations cover a wide range of equipment including, cranes, fork-lift trucks, etc. LOLER does not apply to escalators, these are covered by more specific Regulations. If you allow employees to provide their own lifting equipment, then this too is covered by the Regulations.

What do the regulations require me to do? You need to ensure that in using any lifting equipment the requirements of LOLER are met. For example, you should ensure that all lifting equipment is: sufficiently strong, stable and suitable for the proposed use. Positioned correctly to prevent injury Correctly identified

Conclusion The inspections are met at regular intervals in the workplace and very dependant on the equipment. This is also a good act for people that have physical conditions as it means they have their limits on lifting and lowering equipment.
