CPU Transforms Input and Output Each computer contains one Collection of electronic circuits Processor Interpretates and execute instructions in a program Circuit board/ motherboard

Not all software is compatible with every CPU. Chips in Intel’s Core i7 backward compatible with core 15, core 13, core 2 duo, Celeron, Pentium, 486,386 and 286 chips. Processors by Advanced Micro Devices are made to be compatible.COMPABILITY

Some processors much faster than other Modern computer speed measured called gigahertz. Many core machines may have hundreds or tens of processors per chip. Web browsing convenient to use faster machine. PC performance affected by architecture.PERFORMANCE

BUY GREEN EQUIPMENT USE A LAPTOP TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ENERGY-SAVING FEATURES TURN IT OFF WHEN YOU’RE AWAY SAVE ENERGY, NOT SCREENS TURN IT ALL THE WAY OFF AVOID MOVING PARTS PRINT MOVING PARTS PRINT ONLY ONCEUSE A GREEN FONT E-CYCLE YOUR WASTE PRODUCTS PASS IT ON SEND BITS, NOT ATOMS CONSIDER HIDDEN ENVIRONMENTAL COSTS OF YOUR DECISIONS TIPS TO HELP MINIMIZE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

MULTICORE TO CLUSTER Multiple servers can be grouped together in a cluster to improve speed. Google uses a cluster of thousands of PCs to handle millions of search queries a day. Parallel processing used in high-end servers and workstations for time.

COMPUTER’S MEMORY RAM memory most common type of primary storage. Read-only memory (ROM) computer can only read information from it. Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) store small amounts of data for long periods. Flash memory can be written and erased rapidly and repeatedly.

Popular cpu’s Intel Xscale used in mobile and embedded devices. ARM used in MP3, smarthphones and handheld devices Cell processor used in game machines, mainframes, super computers etc. Tilera TILEGEX line used in video conferencing, wireless base stations, and high-end network conrollers. Intel Core 2 used in PCs and servers. Intel i3/5/7 used in PCs and servers. AMD used in PCs and servers

HOW MEMORY WORKS CPU can store information into RAM and retrieve information from RAM. RAM chips usually grouped on small circuits boards called dual in-line memory models (DIMMs) Information permanently recorded on the ROM.

BUSES, PARTS AND PERIPHERALS Information travels between components through groups of wires called internal buses or buses. Buses connect to storage devices in bays. Buses also connect to expansion slots inside the computer´s housing. Buses connect to ports that are generally used to attach peripherals. Peripherals are connected to ports trough external buses.

TOMORROW’S COMPUTER Researchers are working to produce future computers smaller, faster, more powerful, and more energy efficient that today´s state of the art. Make new chips faster, or make it more energy efficient. Carbon-bases nanoscale processors could be much smaller and consume far less electricity than conventional silicon-bases microprocessors.

THE CLOCK OF THE LONG NOW Clock´s works consist of a binary digital- mechanical system which is accurate and revolutionary. The eventual Clock is experienced to keep proliferating design ideals for a while. Long Now added a “Library” dimension with the realization of the need for the content to go with context provided by the Clock. The point is to explore whatever may be helpful for thinking, understanding, and acting responsibly over long periods of time.

ANSWER QUESTIONS Do you think the Long Now Clock is a good idea? Why or why not?  Yes, you have new ways of thinking in the world. Can you think of other ways to encourage long-term thinking?  Yes, one is by getting some ideas and you will encourage long-term thinking.
