MyTransTracker Lo-fi Prototyping and Usability Testing Joseph Chen John Calhoun Dayne Wagner Drew Bregel

Overview Mission Statement Tasks Paper Prototype Structure Three Scenarios Usability Testing Suggested UI Changes Summary

Mission Statement To provide community-driven route recommendations for alternative methods of transportation in both common and uncommon situations e.g. supports uploading of trip information and traveling by bus/bike

Tasks Verifying arrival time of a routine trip Planning a mixed bus/bike trip Letting the community know about construction detours or scenic routes

Lo-fi Prototype Structure

Scenario: Verify Arrival Time 5 PM @ UW Want to make sure to arrive home by 6 PM Using a mix of bus/bike transportation modes

Scenario: Verify Arrival Time Select “Take/View a Trip”

Scenario: Verify Arrival Time Select “Home”

Scenario: Verify Arrival Time Verify arrival time

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination 2 PM @ Bellevue Square Bus/Bike to Charlie’s House by 4 PM Don’t want to ride more than 5 miles

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination Select “Plan a Trip”

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination Select “Destination”

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination Select “Destination” Select “Saved Locations”

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination Select “Destination” Select “Saved Locations” Select “Charlie’s House”

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination Select the Bike and Bus icons Select Arrive by 4 PM Charlie’s House

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination Drag the 2 nd bike icon towards the finish to shorten that length of the bike trip Bike: 7mi Bus: 8mi 4:00 PM 3:15 PM 3:24 PM 3:44 PM 5mi 8mi 2mi

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination Select “Take Trip” Bike: 5mi Bus: 10mi 4:00 PM 3:15 PM 3:24 PM 3:52 PM 3mi 10mi 2mi

Scenario: Bus/Bike to a Destination 4:00 PM 3:15 PM 3:24 PM 3:52 PM

Scenario: Tagging a Trip Just finished a trip Encountered a road hazard due to construction and want to alert the community and mark the detour Also want to let the community know of a scenic bike route

Scenario: Tagging a Trip Select “Tag a Trip”

Scenario: Tagging a Trip Select the latest trip, “Bellevue Square to Ballard”

Scenario: Tagging a Trip Drag finger along reroute

Scenario: Tagging a Trip Select “Detour” Also highlight the scenic route and tag

Scenario: Tagging a Trip Select “OK”

Usability Test Method Facilitator: John Observer: Joseph Computer: Dayne Quick demo to show how to interact with paper prototype Additional screens sketched when necessary

Usability Test Results Unclear wording On main menu (unsure which button to select to accomplish task, esp. for feedback) “Drag me” wording was unclear “Tag a Trip” wording was unclear People like to save trips and then immediately take them Some highlighted the interrupted route, some the detour route Specified start location despite the default being correct Checked filters/preferences to look for bike miles

Usability Test Results Test Limitations Slow computer lead to user assuming he made a mistake, technique/test method flaw Difficult to simulate animations and inputs Difficult to simulate interactions during the context of a trip in progress

Suggested UI Changes Pick clearer wording for main menu items Pick clearer wording for defaults and help bubbles Possibly change organization from task- oriented to structure-oriented Distinguish between similar-looking screens (color schemes based on the section?)

Conclusion Developing the paper prototype helped nail down concrete interfaces Usability testing revealed design flaws that were obvious to users but not us Also revealed shortcomings of Paper Prototyping A lot of good ideas for another design iteration
