From: www.enotes.com

Irony: Not What We Expect Irony is the word that describes the difference between what we expect or what seems suitable and what actually happens.

Irony: Not What We Expect For example: Imagine that we elected a mayor that ran for office on a platform of honesty and is caught with missing funds from the campaign. We expect the mayor to be honest because he says he is, so it is ironic when he is caught

Verbal Irony Verbal irony takes place when someone says one thing but means the opposite. Wow! You are a great driver! Why is this man’s statement an example of verbal irony?

Situational Irony... Situational Irony- describes an event that is not just surprising, but actually contrary or opposite than what we expected. Why is this picture of a cemetery with a “dead end” sign a good example of situational irony?

Irony... Farmer Brown froze in his tracks; the cows stared wide eyed back at him. How can this Cartoon be viewed as an example of irony?
